Unable to boot to IDA v5 on S2600CP

$

I've been pulling out my hair trying to solve this, a new S2600CP Board, dual Xeon E5-2630s, is unable to boot to the IDA v5. I've tried several different types of media, including USB boot, and several copies of the disc, however I always receive a "Unable to access boot device" error.

So far I've replaced RAM (Currently using 16GB of Crucial workstation RAM), both processors (tried with a single processor as well), multiple boards (fully up-to-date firmware), every SATA configuration, and several different methods of booting to the IDA.

I'm at complete loss here.

FALSASMP Midplane - Couple Questions

$

Hello,

I apologize if any information is incorrect or if I sound like an idiot beforehand. Anyway, I have a FALSASMP midplane sitting inside of an Intel SR2500 2u case which is paired with an Intel S5000XAL motherboard. This machine has been built from scratch and is running perfectly, however, I am unable to set up a HW (Hardware) RAID using my new FALSASMP Active Midplane.

When I first purchased the midplane, I was under the assumption and the sway of an Intel tech that I would not require the AXXMINIDIMM or the AXXRAK18E (Raid Activation Key) in order to build a RAID 10 array. I did not purchase these so I am currently running the FALSASMP without a RAK or MINIDIMM and it's working fine as a pass-through device (IT mode if I am correct). However, I want it to run in IR mode, and I can't seem to figure out why I can't get it into this mode. My questions are listed below, I did a ton of research online about this but I was unable to find much. Many thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

1.) The firmware on the FALSASMP is the 1.11 - IT, I found what I believe is a firmware update at the link below. I did download and make an attempt to flash the firmware, but when using the EFI shell to run the script I get an error stating "No LSI adapters found! Limited Command Set Available! SASFlash Version is: 1.20.00.00." Is there something I am missing here? Do I need to update the firmware to the 1.20 version on the midplane?

Firmware downloaded:

Download Center

2.) Do I require the AXXRAK18E and the AXXMINIDIMM?

Extra Notes:

- No this is NOT the FALSASMP2 midplane

- No warranty available

- I want use this box for an ESXi setup, so a SW (Software) RAID is not an option. (Unless someone knows a way around this, please let me know).

- I am not sure on the type of back-plane being used (what model) but if it's required, I can find it. I do know it's SATA and I have 4 1TB sata drives installed.

- Yes I understand these parts are old, but what was originally going to be a developer's play house turned into a more serious build (Won't be production but will house several very useful business tools).

S5000pslsata Server Board Broken Raid 5 Array

I have a customer that has a Intel server with S5000PSLSATA system board.  Server has been running fine for some time (5 Years). The server has 6 750Gb Seagate drives.  2 of the drives are configured as Global Hot Spares.  The rest of the drives (4) are configured as a Raid 5 array.  Last week, the server locked up and had to be rebooted.  The customer called me when the server would not come up.  The 2 global spares had died. The server was trying to rebuild the raid array because another drive was also failing.  I had to order two more drives so i returned the server to the office for repair. When I started the server back up and entered into the embedded raid utility, I noticed that two of the good raid drives showed READY and two of the other drives showed ONLIN A00-00 and ONLIN A00-01.  The virtual drive still shows the raid 5 array with a size of 2.14TB but the status is degraded.  Is there a way to add the two ready drives back to the existing array and let it rebuild without losing data?

Thanks for all your help.

Component Unfit for every Server blade on mfsys25

Hello,

all of the sudden the Modular Server Control shows for both blades that are installed "Component unfit". I have reinserted both blades allready and restarted the whole CMM. I even installed the latest Firmware (6.10) to resolv that problem, but I did not change anything either. The blades are still working properly, but due to that massage I do not get any further option in Modular Server Control, e.g. remote KVM, shutting down etc. What else can I do to fix that issue?

Cannot Install VMWare ESXi S2600CP2 in ESRT-2 RAID

Dear All, I have 10 server using Intel ServerBoard S2600CP2 Board, I've been confused dealing with VMWare ESXi 5.x Installation. Its been 2 weeks since I decided to build Server using S2600CP2 and 2 x E5-2620, but I found a dead end with ESXi Installation. Unfortunately, I've bought 10 RKSAS8R5 for upgrading my SAS Capability, and it didn't work with ESXi. I try to use both ESRT-2 and RSTe, but no driver could detect the RAID Controller. My question:

1. Is there any fit driver for ESXi 5.x?

2. How could I maximize using Virtual Machine, especially with VMWare ESXi 5.x? Or, does anything VM Program outside VMWare?

3. I try to unplug the RKSAS8R5 from the SATA/SAS, and then, my all system is still detected the SAS HDD. Is the RKSAS8R5 one time plug for all system, or just one system?

Thank you for your attention and answer.

Identify issue with amber blinking light on the front panel (S5520SC)

In the technical product specification  of the board I can see that the problem can be connected with on of the following issues:

– Critical temperature threshold asserted

– CATERR asserted

– Critical voltage threshold asserted

– VRD hot asserted

– SMI Timeout asserted

First thing that caught my attention were metrics from vsphere client which shows that one of the fan was spinning at half of speed (1500rpm) compared to the others. Is there any location to check any threshold value and if this can be a problem?

sensors2.PNG

Second issue that can be connected with the blinking led could be probably temperature of the  cpu. In the attached picture from vsphere temperatures are marked as normal but values seems to be messed up..

sensors1.PNG

Third thing that I came around in the /var/log/messages was a warning that one of the disk is above the temparature treshold. After checking smart parameters I could see that all metrics were ok except one - Driver Rated Max Temperature. Could this metric trigger the blinking led?

raid still reporting predictive failure after drive replacement

$

I have a machine running centOS 5.3.  It has a 6-disk raid 5 array. According to the raid web console 2, The raid card appears to be SRCSASBB81.

About a week ago, I started to receive these predictive failure warnings (once per day).

Controller ID: 0  PD Predictive failure: --:--:4

Generated on:Mon Sep 16 08:29:57 2013

SYSTEM DETAILS---

IP Address: REDACTED

OS Name: Linux

OS Version: 2.6

Driver Name: megaraid_sas

Driver Version: 00.00.04.01-RH1

IMAGE DETAILS---

BIOS Version: 1.12.122-0393

Firmware Package Version: 8.0.1-0029

Firmware Version: NT16

So, I started the intel raid web console, looked at all the drives and saw that drive 4 did have a "pred fail count" of 1.  All the other disks had 0 in that field.  I figured that's what the "--:--:4" in the warning was referring to.  I backed up everything on the raid, identified the physical location of all drives then using the raid web console took drive 4 off line (putting the raid into a degraded state).  The light on the physical drive in the expected location turned orange - as expected.  I removed the disk and replaced it with a new one.  The raid rebuilt and came back to optimal with the new disk.  All went as planned. Yay!

However, every morning at 7:30 AM, I still get this same predictive failure warning.  The "pred fail count" on the new disk (like all the others) is now 0.  Everything looks fine.  Is there some file where I have to manually reset some failure count?  I can't see anything in the UI that indicates there is something else I need to do.

Please help me understand what's going on and what further steps I should take

Thanks.

W2600CR2 Shuts Down

I need assistance with a new P4000IP/W2600CR workstation system being set up. It is fitted with 128 Mb memory, an SSD, 4 hard drives, a DVD drive and RSTe dongle. It has 2@ E5-2687W CPUs.

The problem is:

1. The system shuts down during BIOS setup.

2. With a quick reboot, it sometimes shuts down without completing POST or reaching BIOS.

3. During POST, there is a beep sequence: beep..... beep-beep (long space).... beep-beep-beep (short space); however, the system goes to boot and can get into BIOS with no problem. Some of these appear to be related to codes for proper start of the Intel RAID.

It appears to be a thermal problem, but I cannot seem to make it any better.

1. Thermal grease has been checked and replaced on both CPUs.

2. Fans are working, and the air duct is in place with a closed panel.

3. All CPU and memory reports in BIOS check out.

4. RAID has not been configured, and no OS has been installed.

5. Hard drives are spaced, and there are gaps in the drive rack.

6. All storage is seen by the BIOS properly.

Other than the shutdown problem, everything seems normal. I really need some assistance debugging this one.

Thanks in advance.

SR2400 with SE7520JR2 mobo, SCSI to SATA conversion?

$

0

As the title suggests, I have a SR2400 server chassis with a SE7520JR2 motherboard. This has the original scsi configuration that comes with the server. I've noticed kits to swap out the backplane and make it SATA ready. We repurpose old servers at NAS boxes to save money and was wondering if this is possible with what I have? I'm thinking i'd need a 3rd party RAID card to get all 6 drives working to replace the Adaptec SCSI riser card to get this working. Any insights would be appreciated!

Edit: Doing further research, we might have to also buy the RAID card on ebay, just read a Tested Hardware and Operating Systems List document from Intel for the SE7520JR2 and all the cards listed are fairly old. Cheap buys on ebay, though so it'll save that much more money.

CPU cooling suggestions for X5355 on S5000PSL

$

I have a S5000PSL that had X5148's with big heat sinks and no fans.   The previous owner just jammed a fan on top of the fins of the heat sink.  I bought a pair of X5355 and now I'm really in need of better cooling.  There are still plenty of LGA775 coolers for sale but I can't tell if they'll be enough for this CPU, nor can I tell if I'll be able to mount two of them side-by-side as the CPU's sit fairly close to each other.

It looks like there was some kind of duct but the prior owner snapped off part of the plastic connectors and I'm not sure how to mount it or if it's even possible to use it.

Any suggestions?

ssr212mc2r with SRCSAS144e exhibiting strange behavior with consistency check after drive replacement

$

Update 11/05/2013:  The option to stop the Consistency check reappeared as a right-click option on the virtual drive within RAID Web Console 2.    Consistency Check was stopped without incident.   Considering proactive replacement of the drive.

Subject:   ssr212mc2r with SRCSAS144e exhibiting strange behavior with consistency check after drive replacement

On a RAID 5 array that has been running in production for nearly 4 years, with numerous hot swap replacements of both SAS and SATA drives, on two different arrays within the 12 drive enclosure:  A SATA drive failed and went off line.  The drive was marked offline with the Intel Raid Web Console (LSI), a new drive was inserted, and the rebuild commenced and completed.   A subsequent consistency check has continued to "iterate", with the error messages seeming to indicate a potential issue with the new drive.

My question is:  Is there a problem marking the suspected bad drive offline with a subsequent replace and rebuild while the "background initialization"  from the consistency check is occurring?
